7 Minute Reading Time
Between July and October of this year, I navigated through several room renovations, each step a magickal learning process. After the dumpsters and dump trucks, the release of hundreds of physical objects, the reorganization process, and the embrace of a large number of changes, I realized what a massive undertaking we managed to motor through. At the end of it all, I thought, “I should share some of the techniques I used to get through this mess!” The following is a result of my experience and a story or two from my covenmates on their experiences with magickal home repair. Enjoy!
Home renovations and repairs can bring a fresh, new boost to your living area, but they can also come with challenges that may feel overwhelming. By using a spiritual approach to move through the physical changes, you can minimize some of the natural stressors that come along with any significant environmental transformation.
First, let's embrace the idea that the energy of your space is just as vital as the physical space and acknowledge the union of the seen and the unseen. The physical changes you make are on the surface, but the real change is in the energy dynamic and its flow. Adjustments from renovations and home living repair present an opportunity to make substantial, positive shifts that will exponentially affect your daily life in the days, months, and years to come. Here are some friendly tips to help you tackle home renovations with a magickal mindset.
Set Clear Intentions and Be Realistic and Honest With Yourself
Before diving into your changes, set some time aside to think about what you really want to achieve. Are you looking for a cozy retreat, a more organized space, just a fresh look, or is this more serious - a forced major repair or a necessary upgrade? Jot down your goals and display them somewhere you’ll see often and remember that it is okay to massage those goals to meet the needs of all family members as you move forward. If you are dealing with necessary changes rather than aesthetic ones, consider how they can positively impact your life. Forced changes (like a broken sewer line that leaves you knee-deep in disgusting glop) need time to process -- you may grieve the loss of personal possessions, the way a room looked in happy childhood memories, or the many happy hours you played with your deceased pet on that floor, etc. Allow yourself the time to align yourself with the new plans.
I have found that the most essential mental step you can take is to agree with yourself that you will rise above all challenges and to accept that this is a process of change. Energy will ebb and flow as it should to reach the exact vibration of your intent, whether it is a new project or the need to fix a problem. It may be helpful not only to write the overall intent, but also to take time each morning to practice a spiritual cleansing and personal alignment that matches your original desires. This could involve meditation, music, chanting, drumming, or any other spiritual practice that resonates with you. Feel confident that it is okay to make any necessary adjustments during the process. This process of setting clear intentions gives you a sense of control and empowerment over your home renovation journey.
Notify Your House Spirits
I know you think I’m kidding. Nope. Every house has its own energy pattern influenced by emotions and events of the occupants past and present. Some magickal groups believe that a house has its own spirit, where others propose different types of spirits have taken up residence which may include land spirits, past non-violent deceased residents, etc. Either way, most believe that these thoughtforms have a definite effect on the health of the structure. Setting up a place of honor for the house/apartment, and practicing acts of gratitude for its protection and safety can encourage a smooth flow of events, particularly if the changes are deep such as the removal of a wall, shoring up of beams, replacing pipes, etc. A small shelf or corner table works well. As you are assembling your place of honor, talk to the house. Tell it what you are planning to do. Add a picture of the house on the shelf where the house number is clearly visible. Where some will envision their house spirit as a gnome or elf, another person may see it as a grand dame, or something a bit more weighty in countenance. There is no right or wrong – only what you believe. Our house spirit lives in a bucket. Each season I clean out the bucket and replace offerings and his nesting items. For renovations and repairs, I usually write what the changes will be on a piece of paper and ask for his blessing.
Consider Auspicious Timing and Other Energy Factors
You may wish to utilize astrological event planning techniques or Feng Shui construction guidelines when planning your renovation/repair dates. I realize that tailoring dates isn’t always possible – workers have job schedules, accidents that must be quickly repaired happen, or you may be planning your DIY over a vacation from work. Piddling around with charts, calendars, and a ream of auspicious reminders in the formulation of the right timing may not be possible. Life happens, right? Start with the basics if you can such as the day of the week, phase of the moon, or moon in the signs, and work from there. Stay away from Mercury, Venus, or Mars retrograde if you can. Steering clear of Saturn and Jupiter retro is also a good idea, but because this timing is for months, avoidance may not be at all possible. Overall, balance, flow of energy, and ease in physical navigation (doorways wide enough, cupboards within your reach, etc.) are worth considering for a successful renovation and even it it is only a repair, perhaps lifestyle improvements can be made. There are several websites that can recommend suitable timing, including The Farmers’ Almanac https://www.almanac.com/bestday/start-projects which suggests the upcoming New Moons and you will find “the best day” search may center on specific religious or cultural beliefs. The fact that you are considering a “best day or good timing” adds to the success of the project because you have contemplated helpful options and opportunities.
Create a Positive Space and Spiritually Cleanse the Living Area
Before renovations begin, walk the entire area and cleanse with holy water and sacred smoke. Sweep the same space with a broom or vacuum, then mix the debris with blessed salt before disposing of it. As renovations get underway, it’s easy for things to feel a bit chaotic. To counteract that, create a calm zone in your home—a little sanctuary filled with plants, candles, or artwork that inspires you. This space will be your go-to spot when you need to take a breather and reconnect with your vision. Continue the sweeping and cleansing process throughout the period of change, particularly if events become stressful. Once a week, open all the doors and windows for 15 minutes, asking natural energies (deities, angels, etc., your choice) to cleanse the area -- use a lit candle and bells to heighten the spiritual vibrations. Push debris out the back door if possible, as it will drag negativity along with physical mess and push it away from your future. Once outside, try to clean up the trash immediately and remove it from your property. If there have been fights, arguments, periods of grief, sadness, etc. sprinkle holy water and salt on the debris before placing it in the trash.
Be prepared for the constant reorganization necessary to accommodate the renovation, which can become tiresome in itself, especially if you thought, "Okay, this spot is done and I can move forward," only to find the area magnetizes clutter and you feel like you haven't made any progress at all. If this keeps happening throughout the process, take some time to do a bit of release work. Release work involves techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, mental review, and the willingness to let go of any negative emotions or stress that may have accumulated during the renovation process. Defeat and frustration tend to draw clutter - renovations or not. If you start to feel overwhelmed, take a break. Leave the area entirely. Enjoy the outdoors, a sports activity, a movie, a night out at a restaurant -- and leave the chaos at home behind for a few hours. Keep in mind that dust and dirt will show up in places you didn't expect, far from the work itself. This brings its own level of frustration if you let it. Be prepared to clean areas that you thought would be unaffected. This phenomenon reminds us that change permeates all things, even if we don't see it, which means energetically, everything is always in a state of rebirth.
Prepare and Activate Protective Sigils
Lady K, who is one of my facilitators, reminded me of the importance of merging symbols into the structure of a building or home. A Braucherei practice common in South Central Pennsylvania, but you will find it in other areas and cultures as well practiced on new builds and renovations, particularly involving barns, sheds, and homes. Many times this practice also employs hex signs as a finishing piece. Draw and activate a selection of protective sigils and place them inside repairs and renovations. For example, we had our floors replaced this summer. Before the workers closed up the area, I placed protective sigils on the subfloors. In some areas I drew right on the subflooring where in others I used slips of empowered paper dressed with protective magickal oils. I chose runic symbols (Helm of Awe and others), the Pentacle, and sigils I have developed over time. I also buried a protection bottle in one room, using Feng Shui techniques. There is no “wrong way” when choosing symbols to protect your home. Breathe easy and choose with joy.
Practice Mindfulness and Do Not Measure Success in How Much Time it Takes
Staying present can make a world of difference when dealing with the ups and downs of renovations. Carve out a few moments each day to sit quietly, breathe deeply, and focus on the now. Acknowledge any stress or anxiety that creeps in but let it flow away without holding onto it. This mindfulness will help keep you grounded and clear-headed. Remember that although this is your vision birthing into manifestation, others involved, from family members to workers, live in this world with you, and their choices and desires are just as powerful as yours. The free will of all can play havoc in your space if their energies, for whatever reason, are not aligning with your vision. Staying present in the moment can help you feel more in control and less overwhelmed by the renovation process. Few changes play out smoothly, rather they go through several layers of adjustment to meet the energy alignment you vibrate. If you acknowledge this process from the beginning you will be more focused on the overall project rather than the timing. Granted, deadlines In some cases are necessary. But, if you hold too tight to them, you can actually push them away. We needed our changes to be done by a certain date because we were bringing home puppies. While in transit in another state, we learned that the renovations were delayed because a wall of shelving fell on one of the workers. He was hurrying and tried to move the shelves by himself. My lesson? Have a contingency plan in case your deadline gets blown!
Employ Aroma Magick
Adding aromatherapy and incense/air magicks to your environment can lessen the stress and boost your confidence and determination throughout the process. Incense, perfumes, fresh cut herbs in a bowl mixed with water and crystals, or boiling herbs and spices on the stove can enhance your experience and help to remove negativity. My favorites included lavender, anise hyssop, rosemary and sage. I also used hydrosols that I made myself on bedding and curtains.
Closer to Nature
Nature has a magical way of helping us feel balanced. Consider incorporating natural elements into your renovation, like eco-friendly materials or houseplants that cheer up your space. When feeling overwhelmed, taking a walk outside—even if it’s just in your yard—can help refresh your spirit and bring clarity to your thoughts. Incorporating nature into your renovation not only adds a touch of beauty to your space but also enables you to feel more connected and balanced throughout the process.
Practice Little Rituals
Adding small rituals to your daily routine can bring a sense of calm to the renovation whirlwind. Try lighting a blessing candle before the day begins, or when you need to rework or help with the project. Use a heavy rattle if you experience angst or a run up against changes you didn't expect to keep that resulting negative energy from getting stuck. If doing the renovations yourself, ground and center, bless your tools, and make good use of sweet sounds such as bells or chimes. Take a moment to give thanks for your home or say a blessing over the renovation area. These little moments of tranquil intention and alignment can make a big difference in how you feel, how workers perform, and how family members meet the challenge of the changes being made.
Get Moving
While renovations can be pretty physical if you are doing them yourself, they can also be mentally exhausting if someone else is doing the work - sometimes fraught with feelings of inadequacy and loss of control. In either circumstance, don’t forget to care for yourself. Activities like yoga, dance, or even a brisk walk can help keep your energy up and stress levels down. These practices improve your physical well-being and boost your emotional resilience, preparing you to tackle any hurdles that come your way.
Reach Out for Support
Don’t hesitate to involve your friends and family during this process! Involving these folks can bring laughter and lightness to the experience. A friendly support system to share progress, celebrate milestones, or vent frustrations is always a plus. They can bring solace, offer interesting ideas, and highlight accomplishments you may have overlooked. Design a Ritual of Beginning for the start of the renovations or repair and invite your friends and covenmates! When the chances are completed, hold a celebratory ritual of closure and gratitude!
Keep an eye on family members to ensure the renovations aren't taking an unnecessary toll on their mental well-being. Some family members may experience panic, fear, frustration, anger, or sorrow, particularly if the changes affect their personal space or if they have just completed a project that is now being obliterated due to unforeseen circumstances. They may lash out, creating an atmosphere of general unhappiness. Be sure to seek proper counseling if their behavior escalates and you are unsure how to manage the situation. Try to keep everyone in the loop on unexpected changes and be prepared to make compromises. Reward family members for good behavior and acknowledge the stress they are under.
Express Gratitude
Throughout the process, open your heart to expressing gratitude - to the universe for sharing these energies, for the exciting learning experiences that enhance your life, to your friends and family for their support (or tolerance), to those helping you or the individuals doing the job for their time, energy, and expertise, to nature for soothing your senses, etc. Begin and end every day throughout the process by expressing your thanks. You can continue this activity long after the renovations are done.
Closure
Whether the project sailed along smoothly or had a bump or two, a ritual of cleansing and closure will tidy-up your energy work and ensure that all connections that should be severed are cut. For example, Lady C always dreamed of a beautiful, modern kitchen, a place where she could unleash her culinary creativity and gather with friends and her large family. After months of planning, in early 2019 right before Covid hit, she hired a team of workers who promised to bring her vision to life using a new technique that they claimed would revolutionize her space. Trusting their ability, Lady C signed the contract and paid the fee.
Days turned into weeks, and her excitement flipped to disappointment. The workers struggled at every turn. The mess was phenomenal, more than she expected, and she found grime and dust even in bedrooms at the other end of the house. At one point, what started as a simple countertop installation spiraled into chaos. The surface buckled, the backsplash sat cockeyed, and the repositioned appliances didn't fit properly. The workers even poured cement into her dishwasher, which she had to painstakingly chip out with a knife to save the appliance! Lady C's dream kitchen quickly became a nightmare that drained not only her funds but also her spirit.
When the workers finally left, she decided to perform a cleansing ritual to disconnect herself and her home from the negativity those involved brought into her life. With holy water and a white candle, she moved through the house, eventually pushing the negative energy out the back door. She used a ritual knife and Braucherei prayers to sever the workers' energy connection. As an added benefit, she cast a spell that would cause them to forget her home and her bank account information. With a final, decisive cut through the air, Lady C stated, "You shall not return nor ever intone my name or the names of my family! So Mote It Be!" She has never heard from them since.
Enjoy the Journey
Renovations and physical repairs are a journey, not just a destination. Stay open to changes and enjoy the experience! Each bend along the path can teach you something valuable. Patience? Adaptability? Life values? Sometimes, major adjustments are necessary to make critical directional changes toward your vibrational goal. These adjustments in your environment may bring changes in spirituality, career, life purpose, or general family circumstances. By embracing the knowledge that the result will never be static, you’ll find it easier to navigate any challenges that come your way. Stay optimistic and open-minded, and you'll find joy in the transformation taking place within your home-and within you!
