If we bumble around in the dark our thoughts turn dark, our behavior changes to inky yuck, and after a time…all seems stuck, dreary, and boring. If our curtains are full of dust and our windows are dirty, then maybe there’s something in our life that we just don’t want to see…
Let in the light! And that’s what Winter Solstice is all about, right? Or, perhaps you’re from down under and you are soon celebrating Summer Solstice — all about light!
Feng Shui teaches us that negative energy hides in the shadows of our homes — those dark and dim areas where dust bunnies roam in packs and cobwebs become a sticky shrine to the Goddess Grime. Yes, by the way, I finally got to the cobwebs. Took me a week; but, bristled weapon in hand I vanquished every last one of them (I think).
I warn you, those dark areas? They try to stay that way. You put a light there. It goes out. You open the curtains? They swing shut in a day. Yep. Stubborn. But, you will persevere!

Release Program Diary
Ruthless! So, I’m looking for something today (at the last minute, of course) right before I’m ready to run a few errands. I open the bottom of my magickal cabinet trying to find it. The bottom of the cabinet isn’t magickal (just the top) and so I’m down on my knees, pulling stuff out and suddenly I sit back and I say to myself, “What am I doing? For the past three years I have cleaned out this cabinet and promptly put most of it back. In three years, I have not touched any of this stuff. This is ridiculous!” I took my coat off, threw my keys back on the table and fetched a trash bag. With gusto I pitched everything. Every last little scrap of paper, dusty knickknack, and aged file folder full of crap that maybe-I’ll look-at-someday-when-I-get-to-it — which I never did.
When I sat back I looked at an entire empty cabinet.
Wow.
Then, I got to thinking, what do I want to fill that space with? These days, maybe it is because I’m older, I don’t have a lot of driving desire for stuff. You know, how you salivate over stuff when you’re younger? The electronics, the furniture, the cars…sigh. You feel you’ve just gotta have it and so you strive for it?
I think harder. Isn’t there something I always wanted? There is one thing — I have this dream? I’ve always kidded my children about it. I want a brand new ATV with a big snow shovel on it, and Yule lights, and a big, loud hawooogha horn. And I want a fluorescent pink snow suit and boots with fake white fur on them — and the suit has to say: Granny on the back in big sparkly letters. And then? When it snows? I’ll rev up my ATV and shovel everyone’s sidewalk on the block — because we have old people who can’t afford to pay someone to shovel snow, and we have a pregnant girl up the way, and another who has to work late shifts at a nursing home and…you get the picture. Glowing Granny on Wheels!
I sit back and shake my head.
Dreams are interesting, aren’t they?
So, I write on my 3×5 card: Family Joy and place it quietly in the cabinet.
